The Ancient site of Gunung Kawi, Bali

Gunung Kawi is a very special ancient site located on the north side of Ubud, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. This ancient site consists of 10 rock carved shrines, cut on the cliff face. "Gunung" is mountain and "Kawi" is carving, therefore the meaning of "Pura Gunung Kawi" is a Shrine that carved on the mountain. The temple is located on the valley. The visitors must walk down through 320 stairs from the parking area.

This historical site was found in 1920. Now it becomes one of the most attractive areas for tourism in Bali. The carvings on the cliff wall is divided into four areas. The first area consists of five temples that are carved from the north to the south on the cliff of the eastern side of the river. The third area is the convent building and niche that are engraved on the cliff in the south of the first. The fourth cluster is a temple and a niche that is used for a hermitage.

This Temple is actually tomb of two Balinese Kings from the 11 centure. The archeologist found the tomb of Raja Anak Wungsu and King Udayana, king of the dynasty Warmadewa, the largest empire in Bali. The Balinese people still use this temple for Piodalan ceremony. This ceremony is held every year under the full moon light.
